We all know what a “one hit wonder” means in the pop music world. It refers to an artist who composed just one song and then disappeared doing little of worth the rest of their lives. Of course, this is not true and misses the all the times they almost made it as well as all the timers they failed. And it is these moments that make up a life and a legacy. In fact what’s more likely, is in in the pursuit of a career, fame, or fortune, the artist wrote many songs, some of which they may have liked better than the chart topper that made them famous.
I, like Paul McCartney (who was not the walrus), am not the one hit wonder that gives the book its title. The title comes from a chapter in the book about my entrepreneurial journey in building a company. Though this experience is a good one, it is not my only success, or even my favorite. But as with all my experiences I learned something about me, and about people and this lesson helped me navigate my life going forward. Each chapter is one of my adventures and the lesson I learned that became part of my rules for living and dealing with people and situations.
This life-long process of doing taught me something about my knowing my strengths and weaknesses and helped me become the best man I could be. And the point of this process is very simple… leave the earth a better place than I entered it. This process is not unique to me. I did not create it. It has been practiced by many people throughout the centuries and is called the hero’s journey or the path of the warrior.
I am not trying to sound self or overly important. In fact, the opposite. I have had had lots or laughs, failures and screwups along the way. These experiences also taught me humility, so that when the good times and successes came, I was able to be grateful for them and handle them with humility.
Go ahead. Pick up the book and turn the pages. See if you don’t laugh, cry and maybe even learn some of the lessons I did… and in that process inspire those around you with life’s possibilities.
