The first thing you need to know about me is that I’m a teacher who writes vs a writer who teaches. My students have always been my inspiration and my books would be very different if not written through the lens of an educator who is deeply worried that our children have become disheartened about a country I love. To me, this does not feel like an abstract problem. A country without patriotism feels like a country that will wither, a wandering nation without a soul. I’ve taught at one public high school in Bakersfield, CA for over 25 years. The same school where my dad taught for over 20 years. The school where I met my wife and the school I graduated from, as did my 4 siblings. Diversity is one of my passions. With dual Canadian-U.S. citizenship, a Japanese-American mother, and a B.A. in African history and classical literature, I have quite the eclectic background. I grew up in California and moved to the East Coast of the USA in my mid-twenties, recently settling in Alberta, Canada to raise my three daughters. I grew up in a family with its feet in the past and its head in the future. My grandmothers were taught rudimentary reading and writing at home, but my father and uncles were university graduates and part of Iran's emerging technocratic elite. I've come a very long way even from that: whereas one of my great grandfathers had 25 wives and concubines, I have a PhD from MIT. I am curious: fascinated as much by technology as by the human experience. I started writing for Iranian magazines and journals (including the prestigious weekly Ferdousi) at the age of 14. As a journalist, I became acutely aware of the chasm developing between the traditionalists living in south Tehran and the modernists living in North Tehran. My grandparents lived in South Tehran. Born in England and raised in Canada, Michael has spent his adult life in Europe and South Africa. Michael’s father was a Canadian soldier who met his wife, an English girl, in Croydon, south of London during World War II. Michael emigrated to Montreal, Quebec, with his mother when the war ended, and there he grew up.
